Samsung’s Omnia II / GT-I8000 leaked by online retailer

Samsung Omnia II / GT-I8000

The sucessor to the Samsung Omnia i900 has been leaked by a Lithuanian on-line retailer. According to it, the Omnia 2 will sport a 3.7-inch WVGA TFT resistive touchscreen, 8.1 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and VGA@30fps video recording, 150 MB internal memory, a Qualcomm processor and a microSD card slot. The connectivity includes all you may need as usual - 3G support, Bluetooth, miniUSB, GPS and Wi-Fi.It will also purportedly run on Windows Mobile v6.1 which will run on a customised interface sporting a cubic UI. But I dont think it will be officially upgraded to Windows Mobile v6.5 since it does not sport a hardware Windows button.

The real announcement however will probably due quite soon as the Samsung Unpacked worldwide unveiling event is closing in (15 June 2009).

A YouTube video demoing the Samsung I8000 customized WM interface has been embedded below:

Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0 OS at WWDC

iPhone OS v3

iPhone OS v3

At WWDC yesterday, Apple not only announced the iPhone 3G S, it also showed the attendees the final version of OS v3.

The main features are:

  • Users will now be able to rent and purchase movies from the phone, along with audiobooks.
  • New and improved Safari does JavaScript 3X faster, and supports QuickTime X-style HTTP streaming of audio and video. There’s also AutoFill for forms, and improved HTML 5 support including audio and video tags.
  • Find My iPhone tracks down your phone using MobileMe from any browser. It locates the phone on a map, and also allows you to remote wipe the device, or even play a sound on the phone for locating it around the house — even when it’s on vibrate.

A longer list of new features can be found here(Engadget). You can see the official Apple page here.

The new OS has already been made available to developers. Engadget  already has the firmware update and has put up some screenshots of it.
You can find the screenshots here.

The new OS will come to regular customers after 18th June via a firmware update.

Palm Pre reviewed by Engadget

Palm Pre

Palm Pre

The most capable smartphone which can come nearest to challenging the iPhone has been reviewed in detail by Engadget. This phone runs on the latest OS from Palm: the WebOS.

Read the review here.

According to analysts, Palm has sold around 50000 Pre’s in 2 days since its launch(by the way, Apple sold 146000 iPhones within 2 days of its launch). That isnt too small a number. And the number of sales may have had been limited by the small number of handsets being available at launch. Maybe many more would have had been sold if more handsets were available.

iPhone 3G S(aka iPhone 2009) announced

iPhone 3G S(aka iPhone 2009)

iPhone 3G S(aka iPhone 2009)

The latest iPhone which is now officially known as the iPhone 3G S(S stands for speed) has been announced at the Apple WWDC a few hours ago.

The phone will become available with US carriers on June 18th while 80 other countries will receive the phone in August.

The battery life has improved a lot and offers 5 hours of 3G talk time and 9 hours of WiFi internet use. Because of the new processor being used, it’s much, much faster — some tasks are almost four times faster. Data speeds are upped to 7.2Mbps HSDPA, and the camera is now a 3 megapixel unit with tap-to-autofocus and auto white balance and the phone also supports 30fps VGA video recording with editing features.

Read the launch information here.

Engadget has put up a comparison table between the old 8GB iPhone 3G and the new iPhone 3G S.

Blackberry Storm 2 to be released next month

According to post on the forums of BlackberryOS.com, the next Blackberry i.e the Blackberry storm will be released either next month(June) and no later than July.

She says the internal deadline for training tech support is end of month.
She also mentioned that the Storm 2 will have Wi-Fi and will have the Blackberry OS v5.0 and not the v4 that the original Storm had.

More iPhone 2009 specifications leaked

A little known website has published a rumour regarding the specifications of the yet to be announced iPhone 2009. They seem to tally with the previous rumours posted on the MacRumours forum. According to this site, the new iPhone will have:

* 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
* $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
* 3.2 Megapixel camera
* Video recording & editing capabilities
* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
* OLED screen
* 1.5X The battery life
* Double the RAM and processing power
* Built-in FM transmitter
* Apple logo on the back to light up
* Rubber-tread backing
* Sleeker design
* Built-in compass
* Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
* Turn by turn directions
* July 17th, 2009 release date

Among these specs, the most striking ones(atleast to me) is the OLED screen and battery life improvement. This will make it really hard for the other manufacturers to catch Apple.

Specifications of iPhone 2009 revealed in screenshot

iPhone 2009 specification

iPhone 2009 specification

According to a post here on MacRumours forum, the new Apple iPhone 2009(to be announced soon in June 2009) will have a 600MHz CPU (currently 400MHz), 256MB RAM (currently 128MB), 32GB internal memory (currently a maximum of 16GB), a 3.2 megapixel autofocus snapper, digital compass and FM radio.

The post is accompanied by a screenshot which I have provided at the start of the post.

Though these specifications are definately an improvement over the existing iPhone but still the camera could have had been upgraded to 5MP or even more.

Finally, the poster named Patapon200 mentions that Apple also have in store a 9.7-inch touchscreen tablet, which is expected to be announced later this year.

Since MacRumours has traditionally provided news regarding Apple which most often came true, it is expected that some part of this rumour will hold true when the actual phone is released.

Pictures of Blackberry Storm 2 revealed

Blackberry Storm 2

Blackberry Storm 2

American tech blog Engadget has received some spy shots of the yet to be released Blackberry Storm 2.

According to their source, this new Blackberry will have a stationary screen(should be capacitive) just like the Apple iPhone. Not many people were fond of the Surepress technology present in the Blackberry Storm and the negative reports may be the reason for RIM to drop that technology.

Firefox Fennec now available for WinMo in alpha 1 form

Fennec running on the Touch Pro

Fennec running on the Touch Pro

Those of you who had been looking to try out the mobile version of the desktop Firefox browser had no other option except to use the Windows Mobile based HTC Touch Pro or the Nokia tablets N810/N800.

The latest version i.e the Alpha 1 version of the said browser has been released only for the Windows Mobile platform and the HTC Touch Pro requirement is still there.

Improvements include more efficient memory management, support for add-ons and the user interface now is totally based on CSS. The devlopers say that CSS will help in overcoming any compatibility problems due to various screen resolutions in use today.

They intend on making available versions compatible with other phones in the near future.

Motorola W7 Active Edition announced

Motorola W7

Motorola W7

This phone had been leaked some weeks earlier and back then it looked really ugly. But today when it was officially unveiled to the world, it had somehow managed to be a bit respectable.

It sports a 2.2-inch QVGA display, a 2 megapixel snapper, 3G support, Bluetooth connectivity and memory expansion via microSD slot.

Motorola W7

Motorola W7

It is nice to see 3G connectivity on a Motorola phone running on their propreitary OS. Many Motorola phones had been ignored by the consumers because of the lack of 3G which the company representative had announced was due to the limitation of the OS being used rather than the hardware.

The W7 targets active, sporty people. It features a pedometer application which notifies the users of the number of atepsthat they have covered while jogging or running. The phone also has an accelerometer which can be used to mute the ringing phone, pause or restart the tunes on a run.

The W7 is going to be available by June of this year in Asia and Latin America, but there’s no word on pricing or availability elsewhere.
